Listen To Your Inner Wisdom

The most fearless women I’ve worked with are fantastic listeners. They listen to their colleagues, their friends and their family, but they also listen to their inner voice. Often times referred to as “gut instinct” or “women’s intuition,” these women have an inner voice encouraging them to take the unknown path and they are following that inner voice, not ignoring it.

But it’s not always easy to hear our inner voice, much less trust it. It takes practice.

I’ve had a regular yoga practice for ten years and a regular meditation practice for two years. Both have helped me tap into my inner voice by quieting the chatter of my mind.

I firmly believe that without my practice of yoga and meditation, I never would have successfully found freedom from alcohol, launched my own company, signed up for yoga teacher training, etc., because my fears would have been louder than the inner voice telling me to follow these paths.

Research confirms my experience. Clinical research on the impact of meditation on the brain has demonstrated that meditation reduces fear and increases creativity.

Brain images taken before and after 10 minutes of meditation show that meditation helps quiet our amygdala, that is our reptilian brain that tells us whether to fight/flight or freeze. This is the part of the brain that feeds our fears. As it quiets, we are less controlled by fear.

At the same time, meditation strengthens our prefrontal cortex where we have executive functioning and pattern spotting. The more we meditate the stronger this part of the brain gets and the more we are able to spot and trust patterns that we did not see before. This helps us see opportunities for breakthrough transformation in our lives.

Hearing, and following, my inner voice helped me discover my longing to change my relationship with alcohol and build my own company. It eased my fears about venturing into the unknown so that I could fulfill my dreams, my longings with focused confidence. So, what’s your inner voice saying to you? What are you longing for?

Try carving out five minutes a day to use a meditation app (Calm, Insight Timer, Headspace); don't worry about doing it right, better to be consistent than focus on doing it well.

Journal right after for 2-3 minutes to capture any longings that came up for you.

If meditation is not your jam, try being more mindful of your breath and surroundings the next time you take a walk or run outside; rather than listening to a podcast or audiobook or calling a friend. Spend five minutes of your walk just listening to the sounds and focusing on your breath.

If your inner voice is telling you that you need to act, book a free 30 minute breakthrough call to discuss how you can live a life of freedom.
